Overview
Prometheus is the central hub of human colonization and activity in the galaxy. The planet is roughly the same size as Earth and is considered a "goldilocks" planet, in that it is positioned at just the right distance from its sun to gain optimal light for growth and habitation of human beings. From space, the planet looks mostly blue, though closer observation shows that towards the Northern pole the blue is actually a very large tundra of ice that stretches down roughly 12% of the Northern hemisphere.
On Prometheus there are six major landmasses large enough to constitute continents. Three of them are separated by only a hundred miles of ocean area between the landmasses, with a fourth being on the opposite side of the planet and the fifth some distance to the south of that. The sixth landmass is the icy tundra in the Northern hemisphere. Most of this knowledge has been gained by orbital observation; the majority of the planet has yet to be explored and/or recorded.
When first arriving to the galaxy, humans observed the planet from afar and sent orbital drop ships to investigate closer. Declaring it safe and habitable, they decided to settle on the planet and chose to begin colonization on the same continent to ensure safety of their small numbers. Each of the four ARCs took up residence on what eventually became known as Saluta, derived from the latin term Salutem, meaning safety. As of SR 4, the other continents have yet to be given names.
Colonies
Prometheus currently has four colonies of human populace, each established and named after the respective ARC ships that carried the humans from the Sol System to the new galaxy. Future endeavors will expand the current holdings and eventually spread out to create new towns and cities. Currently, however, the vast majority of humans still remain in cryogenic sleep aboard the ARCs waiting to be woken when the colonies grow enough to accommodate the new personnel. The ARCs remain in orbit over Prometheus.
The four human colonies are:
1. Perseus
Located in the foothills near a large river, surrounded by mountains on three sides. As the central location for off-world STG (jump team command), Perseus' primary scientific focus is on exploration, charting of space routes, and collecting samples to return to the colonies. To support the jump team missions, a large portion Perseus' research teams are astro-physicists and engineers. Scientific branches are physics, chemistry, xenology.
2. Achilles
Located East of Perseus on the opposite side of a mountain range, settled on a plateau near an ocean. As it expands, it will most likely be forced to build upward or construct floating buildings on the water. It is also the center of the human colonies' administration efforts, cataloguing, archives, and its future government. Its primary scientific focus is oceanography, astronomy, and meteorology. Doctor Halize heads the efforts in Achilles and is the chief ambassador to foreign nations, alien species, and the de facto leader of the human colonies until such time as all of the ARC sleepers have been woken and a diplomatic vote can take place to elect a president.
3. Heracles
Located on wide, fertile plains to the south of Perseus. Heracles is the central location for crop development and ecological implementation. As well, Heracles directs the ground support and inter-colonial security efforts of the STG. Its primary scientific focus is ecology, botany, and geography. With the most land area and easy access to drinkable water, Heracles supplies most of the crops to Achilles, and is responsible for the storage and maintenance of emergency reserves.
4. Theseus
Located roughly South of Heracles, under the foot of the Eastern mountain range and seated against a massive rock wall to the North. To the south of Theseus lies miles of swampy wetlands that are home to many dangerous creatures. Because of this, Theseus has erected energy walls surrounding the compound to keep out any unwanted visitors. It is the smallest of the colonies and is the only colony without jump teams. Its primary scientific focus is research and development, biology (including medicinal research), and zoology.
More information to follow as research and cataloguing efforts continue.
