Name of Species- Petalians
Appearance and Biology- Petalians are humanoid amphibians from the planet Sarvitra, though they are shorter and more densely muscled than humans. The average adult male reaches a maximum height of about 5'5'' and weighs around 200 pounds. Due to the denser gravity on their home planet they have developed with sturdier bones and muscles to deal with the added pressure.
Petalians have tough green skin and most bear random markings of gray and black. Hair color is generally dark colors or green or brown or black. They have sturdy features and large eyes, two arms and legs, and are born with a prehensile tail. Some have their tail removed at a young age, though others choose to retain it; the tail can reach a length of half their height. Their feet are longer and flatter than humans, used to help propel them while underwater, though it does reduce their speed on land.
Sarvitra's atmosphere is comparable to Prometheus' own, and the petalians developed similar respiratory structure to that of a humans with the exception of having a third lung.
Culture and Society- Petalians families consist of those that are related by blood as well as close friends, most of whom share in the efforts of raising children as a communal practice. Family members not related by blood are called Kalshaat, an abbreviation of an ancient phrase meaning "first in mind."
Interactions between people not of the family are always courteous and often formal. To be addressed by a petalian without a title or honorific is a sign of deep respect and consideration. Family and Kalshaat are always addressed by first name or by family signature (i.e. brother, sister, father, etc...)
Art is an important consideration in petalian society, as far as imagination is considered. They have no interest in paintings, preferring living art instead. They have developed unique ways of cultivating plants to grow into particular forms. As well, they are fond of games and have many that they play daily as community bonding and for competition.
After spending time with the humans and learning bits about their culture, the petalians discovered the unfound art of movies and fell in love with the stories and effects. Part of the design for the Eternal Spring Station includes an enormous theater and production studio.
Preferred Habitat- Being amphibious, petalians can survive on land or in water, though the prefer the latter. They need warm to hot climates to survive and must have sufficient protective suits when visiting colder planets or habitats.
Philosophy and Religion- Most religions on Sarvitra are polytheistic and follow a lot of the same core principles; morality, honoring one's family, community works and rebirth.
The core religion and the one with the most followers is called Lawashi, and has over thirty deities that rule over different aspects of nature and reality. The key figures are Komui (king of the gods and aspect of the sun), Wivar (mother of the gods and aspect of life itself), and Chhkey (aspect of death.)
Technological Level and Space Flight- Petalians are a highly advanced civilization that obtained space flight hundreds of years before the humans. They have advanced energy production methods and have explored many of the worlds in their region of space, though they have never considered leaving it or seeking others.
They have advanced methods of medicine, though most of it applies only to petalians, and have recently begun investing research into cybernetics after the mass-comm implant breakthrough. One hope is to boost the immune system as well as regulate internal temperatures in colder climates.
Petalian weapons advancement is not as far along as humans. Being a more internally peaceful species, their lack of war in the past few hundred years halted much of the research and development in that area.
History and Interspecies Relations- Petalians are generally peaceful and mostly keep to themselves. They do have a defensive force, but for the past couple of centuries it has been mostly for show. When they first encountered the humans in SR 3, many of them were unsure of what to expect while many others scrambled in fear of the new comers. The defense force rallied members together and met the human Jump Team in an attempted ambush, but Agent Stark persuaded the petalians that the humans had come in peace, absolving much of the initial fear and doubt over the next few months as the two peoples met in peace talks.
While there is still much to learn about the petalians, and for them to learn about humans, they seem to approach the matter of interaction with Prometheus and its colonists with curiosity and intrigue. A particular fancy of the petalians is the wide array of art and entertainment that the humans possess, and they hold an energetic passion to experience it and learn more.
Current relations between Sarvitra and Prometheus are friendly, specifically noting the construction of the Eternal Spring Station located roughly halfway between the two planets. Trade has opened amongst the two peoples for food, medicinal supplies and training, movies, and more.
